We don’t usually think a lot about what we eat in spite of the importance it has for our health. Only this current year more than a thousand million people will suffer from famine whereas five hundred people will suffer from obesity or overweight. The climate change in our planet is actually alarming. Scientists predict that if nothing changes, things will get much worse. That is, the rise of temperatures, the severe water problems and the increasingly few fields available for farming will lead to many more million people suffering from famine and starvation.
Globalization of food systems, offshoring of agriculture and transgenic crops and foods are the factors to blame. The present world food system doesn’t work properly. It is been proved not able to feed the world population in a healthy way nor to protect the environment nor to stop starvation of thousands million people.
Due to the failure of this system, many social movements have arisen claiming for a change. That’s why our stand tries to compile all these ideas under the title: Do we know what we are eating? We will try to find out what kind of foods are on the shelves in our supermarkets and what it is that we consume daily without being aware of it. We will give some good pieces of advice to follow a truly healthy and balanced diet. We will also offer the visitor entertaining tests like blind tasting of organic food to match it with color and taste. We will explain the alternative method to traditional farming (organic agriculture). Thanks to the the urban garden we have grown in our school, we will show our visitors the decorative function vegetables may have. We will also build a skyescraper designed for farming and will present a project about farming in height, which is realistic and uses innovative techniques.
Our stand will comprise a section to explore about Bonsais and its upkeeping. Thus visitors will learn about how to take care of these plants so that they can enjoy a decorative plant at home.
